Response to the Multicultural Framework Review

Response to the Multicultural Framework Review

After inviting communities to share their lived experiences and expertise to enhance Australia for all, it is now time for the government to act on this valuable input by implementing the recommendations outlined in the Multicultural Framework Review (MFR).

As the first major examination of multiculturalism in Australia, the MFR arrives at a pivotal moment. The 2021 census reveals that over half of Australian residents (51.5%) were born overseas or have at least one parent born overseas, and more than 5.5 million Australians speak a language other than English at home. These statistics underscore the importance of a robust and inclusive multicultural framework.

FECCA welcomes the comprehensive recommendations of the MFR, particularly those detailed in the report Towards Fairness. However, acknowledgment alone is insufficient. We encourage the government to take the necessary steps to ensure these recommendations lead to meaningful outcomes.

The MFR provides a clear roadmap to strengthen social cohesion, promote equity, and ensure that our institutions and policies deliver social and economic inclusion for all Australians. It addresses critical issues such as community engagement, representation, and access to services for multicultural communities.

We extend our appreciation to all community members and partner organisations who contributed their insights and collaborated on a joint sector statement outlining key areas for reform. Their collective voices have shaped the MFR’s recommendations, and it is essential that the government builds on this collaboration by implementing these recommendations.
FECCA remains steadfast in advocating for the full implementation of the MFR recommendations. Timely government action will lay a strong foundation for supporting the diversity, inclusion, and economic prosperity of our multicultural nation.

We urge the government to seize this opportunity to strengthen Australia’s commitment to equity and inclusion for all its people.
