Submission on the Adequacy of Newstart and Related Payments
FECCA’s submission on the adequacy of the Newstart allowance highlights its insufficiency in meeting the basic cost of living, urging for an increase in the payment rate to reduce inequality and poverty in Australia. Pointing out that many Newstart recipients, particularly those from Culturally And Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds, face additional challenges such as language barriers, lack of recognition of overseas qualifications, and limited access to employment services. The submission recommends improving communication through in-language resources, removing the four-year waiting period for new migrants to access Newstart, and ensuring employment support services are culturally sensitive and tailored to the needs of CALD communities.
FECCA also advocates for strengthening employment pathways for migrants, including affordable recognition of international qualifications and increased funding for English language programs. It stresses the need for a culturally competent approach to administering Newstart, including better training for frontline staff and improved service consistency. By addressing these systemic issues, FECCA aims to ensure that Newstart supports equitable access to employment and reduces economic vulnerability among diverse populations.
