Submission on Issues Facing Diaspora Communities in Australia

FECCA addresses the systemic barriers faced by Australia’s diaspora communities in participating in and contributing to society. Highlighting the critical role of community organisations in providing support, preserving cultural identity, and acting as a bridge between governments and communities. Challenges include inadequate funding, limited advocacy capacity, and barriers to accessing services and employment due to systemic racism, lack of recognition for overseas qualifications, and language barriers. FECCA emphasises the importance of building social cohesion through targeted funding, culturally competent services, and fostering two-way engagement between diaspora communities and governments.

Also underscoring the importance of addressing visa-related issues, including prolonged waiting times for permanent residency and citizenship, which contribute to “visa anxiety” and hinder social and economic integration. It calls for inclusive policies to ensure fair processing, family reunification, and equitable access to services. Recommendations include implementing a national anti-racism strategy, improving CALD-specific data collection, and revising employment services to support migrants’ contributions to Australia. These measures aim to enhance belonging, equity, and active participation of diaspora communities in Australian society.
