Media Literacy Program - Expression of Interest
Background
Media literacy is the ability to critically engage with media in all aspects of life. In the context of this program, media includes:
- digital platforms (social media, messaging apps streaming services);
- news and reporting outlets;
- film;
- broadcast (TV, radio); and
- print (newspapers and magazines)
Program aim: To strengthen media literacy and reduce the risks of mis- and disinformation in multicultural communities through training and community-led media literacy initiatives. To achieve this aim, the program works towards the following objectives:
- Map media use: Understand how multicultural communities – especially those whose primary language is not English – engage with different types of media and the challenges they face.
- Increase capabilities: Build the capabilities and confidence of community leaders and/or organisations to recognise mis- and disinformation, and to raise awareness of media literacy.
- Explore impact: Examine how media shapes identity, belonging, visibility and connection for multicultural communities.
Who we’re seeking
Community/faith leaders, multicultural community organisations, and media literacy expert organisations interested in strengthening media literacy in their communities.
What this involves
Selected organisations will participate across all the three phases of the program as outlined below:
- In Phase 1 (Discovery) – facilitate at least one consultation with your community members/networks between 6 October to 6 December 2025 (online, in-person, or one-to-one and no longer than two hours) to understand your community’s experiences, needs, and challenges with media access and spotting mis/disinformation.
- In Phase 2 (Education) – participate in a ‘train-the-trainer’ education session (available in-person or online, maximum three hours) for community leaders to build media literacy awareness and practical media literacy skills. Estimated timeframe: November 2025 – March 2026.
- In Phase 3 (Community-Led Projects) – organisations will design and propose their own media-literacy initiative, tailored to the needs and priorities of their community. Estimated timeframe: January – May 2026.
Key questions for discussion in consultations
- What does “media literacy” mean to your community?
- What worries do people in your community have about media use? Any specific incidents of misinformation, disinformation, or scams?
- Where does your community get news/information, and which sources do you trust most?
- Are you fairly represented in the media? What feels accurate – or missing?
- How does media shape identity, inclusion, and belonging in your community?
What is required
- Share your expertise, knowledge or insights into specific media-related behaviours or specific issues that you or people within your community face.
- Be willing to commit to all three phases of the program.
- Be able to fulfil reporting and deliverable requirements based on the service delivery agreement. At a minimum, organisations will be required to provide a short consultation summary (reporting template to be provided) and participants feedback notes.
- Have an ABN and bank details under the organisation’s name.
Funding and support
Participating organisations are eligible for small grants of $5,000–$20,000 per phase to deliver the commitments outlined above across all three phases. Grants are awarded per phase and are subject to the service agreement and meeting phase deliverables. Grant size will depend on the scope and scale of activities proposed, community reach, and resourcing needs.
See the Program Guidelines (in the sidebar) for eligibility, assessment criteria, timelines, and deliverables.
