FECCA Rejects Pauline Hanson’s call for ‘Monoculturalism’

Senator Pauline Hanson’s address to the National Press Club, in which she described multiculturalism as a failed policy and called for a “monocultural” Australia is of great concern to FECCA.

We reject this completely.

Ms Hanson’s nostalgia for a monocultural Australia is based on a historical and factual inaccuracy. There has never, at any stage in Australia’s history been a “monocultural” society. From the First Nations peoples who have cared for this continent for tens of thousands of years, to successive waves of migration that have shaped modern Australia, our nation has always been characterised by cultural diversity.

It is an impossibility to contemplate a ‘monocultural’ Australia.

Australia’s multiculturalism has always been about taking people from all over the world who have contributed to our nation and, in doing so, become proud Australians.

“Even our national anthem reminds us about ‘…those who come across the seas’. Our multiculturalism is one of this nation’s enduring achievements. It has helped build a society that is more prosperous, innovative and cohesive. Millions of Australians from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds contribute every day as workers, business owners, healthcare professionals, teachers, volunteers and community leaders. They are part of what makes this country work,” FECCA Chair Peter Doukas OAM said.

For five decades, FECCA and its members have advocated for an Australia where every person, regardless of cultural background, faith or place of birth, is treated with respect and dignity, and has the opportunity to participate fully in society. That vision is not separate from a strong and proud national identity; it is fundamental to it.

Ms Hanson’s statement about a ‘monocultural Australia’ is an attempt to resurrect the White Australia Policy. FECCA will campaign along with our state and territory members and millions of Australians to reinforce the value of multiculturalism and reject divisive narratives.

We believe this fight is for Australia.
