FECCA Condemns Rising Islamophobic Violence and Threats

The Federation of Ethnic Communities’ Councils of Australia (FECCA) is gravely concerned by the escalation of Islamophobic violence and threats in recent days. Reports of assaults in Sydney and threats made against Muslim communities in Queensland have left Australians shocked and fearful, undermining the safety and trust that should underpin public life.

FECCA condemns these attacks and threats in the strongest terms. We call on political leaders to speak out clearly against Islamophobia, anti-Palestinian racism and all forms of xenophobia. Law enforcement authorities must act with urgency to investigate these incidents and bring perpetrators to justice. Greater investment in community safety and victim support is also urgently needed.

FECCA Chairperson Peter Doukas said:
“These incidents are a shocking reminder of the risks faced by Muslim Australians and those who stand with them. FECCA calls on governments at all levels to act decisively to ensure that no community feels unsafe because of their faith, culture or identity.”

As the peak national body representing multicultural communities, FECCA strongly urges Government to fully implement the recommendations of the National Anti-Racism Framework. This is essential to address the disturbing rise in Islamophobia and to safeguard the values of safety, respect and inclusivity that underpin Australian society. FECCA will continue to work with government agencies, civil society and communities to strengthen national responses to racism and build a safer, more inclusive Australia.
