Developing an Ethical Framework for Research with Ageing CALD Communities
FECCA’s report on developing an ethical framework for research with ageing Culturally And Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities emphasises the need for inclusive and culturally sensitive research practices. Outlining six core guidelines: reciprocity, respect, equality, responsibility, cultural awareness, and integrity, to ensure that research includes CALD Australians and reflects their diverse cultural contexts. There are systemic barriers such as language constraints, lack of cultural competency among researchers, and underrepresentation of CALD communities in ageing research. These issues often result in findings that are not applicable to or inclusive of Australia’s diverse population.
The report calls for a collaborative approach involving researchers, community leaders, and policy-makers to co-design research that benefits CALD communities. Recommendations include embedding cultural awareness in research methodologies, ensuring equitable distribution of benefits, and addressing ethical responsibilities toward participants. It stresses the importance of culturally appropriate communication, including the use of bilingual staff and translated materials, and advocates for improved policies and funding to make CALD-specific research a priority. These measures aim to uphold ethical standards while producing meaningful, inclusive outcomes for older CALD Australians.
