Consultation Report July-December 2019
FECCA outlines findings from consultations with diverse multicultural and ethno-specific communities across Australia, highlighting persistent challenges faced by migrants, refugees, and culturally diverse groups. Key issues include barriers to visa permanency and citizenship, such as lengthy processes and restrictive criteria, affecting their sense of security, employment opportunities, and access to social benefits. Employment challenges are prominent, with systemic obstacles like skills recognition, lack of local experience, and ineffective job services leaving many underemployed or unable to access meaningful work. Additionally, issues such as housing access, language barriers, and racism further impede integration and wellbeing.
The report also emphasises positive experiences, particularly in welcoming cities like Darwin, where community acts have fostered inclusion. However, gaps in support, such as inadequate access to interpreters, government information, and resources for grant applications, hinder community empowerment. Youth face unique pressures balancing cultural expectations at home and external societal norms, often joining youth groups for support. Recommendations from the consultations stress the need for improved access to services, better recognition of overseas qualifications, and inclusive policies to address inequities and promote integration into Australian society.
