Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation

Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation

FECCA has submitted its response to the Communications Legislation Amendment (Combatting Misinformation and Disinformation) Bill 2024, emphasising the significant impact of digital misinformation on multicultural communities. The submission highlights the importance of culturally informed measures to address harmful content, particularly through improved translations, intersectional approaches, and in-language education. FECCA supports stronger regulatory powers for the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) and urges alignment with the National Anti-Racism Framework and recommendations from the Multicultural Framework Review.

The submission draws on the lived experiences of multicultural Australians and underlines the need for inclusive, community-led solutions. It advocates for policies that acknowledge digital literacy gaps and diverse information needs within multicultural communities. FECCA calls for targeted media literacy programs and a collaborative approach with communities to ensure that efforts to combat misinformation and disinformation are effective, equitable, and accessible to all Australians.
