Paincare and the use of opioids in multicultural communities

Paincare and the use of opioids in multicultural communities

Funded by the Department of Health (The department), this project aims to develop culturally appropriate information on opioid use and to build awareness on opioid harm in culturally and linguistically diverse background (CALD) communities. The project will also provide the department with feedback on the issues and barriers affecting people from CALD backgrounds on the safe and effective use of prescription opioids as they try to manage pain.

FECCA conducted four co-design workshops with older people, youth, refugees and asylum seekers, and key agencies delivering aged care services. FECCA also interviewed a range of clinicians, academics, allied health professionals, and pharmacists. Through these, key insights were gathered on perceptions, attitudes and behaviour change on opioid use among CALD communities.

A communication campaign on the safe, healthy and appropriate use of opioids and broadly prescribed pain medicines in CALD communities is ongoing.
